HowTo

Why is it important to have transparency?

  • Transparency creates a sense of community and can build a culture where one doesn’t exist. Revealing answers to who, what, where, how much, why, etc. can sometimes provide the missing context others may need to become inspired or to find solutions to a common obstacle. It also allows others to benefit from learning of the successes, and challenges others have experienced.

What elements of the process should be included in an “about” statement?

  • The MLA's "Guidelines for Evaluating Work in Digital Humanities and Digital Media" recommends "mak[ing] explicit the results, theoretical underpinnings, and intellectual rigor of [the] work" and "showing the relevance of [the] work in terms of the traditional areas of teaching, research, and service." This includes "describ[ing] how [the] work may blend, redefine, or render obsolete the traditional boundaries between teaching, research, and service;" "describ[ing] the process underlying creation of work in digital media (e.g., the creation of infrastructure as well as content) and [the] particular contributions;" "and "describ[ing] how work in digital media requires new collaborative relationships with clients, publics, other departments, colleagues, and students." (Leigh Bonds, The Ohio State University)
